Temperature Compensated Oscilator I was emailed by Conor, M0GVZ, with tip regarding fitting a TCXO temperature compensated oscilator. Here's what he has to say: On 25/05/2020 17:01, Conor M0GVZ wrote: Hi Nick I was having a perusal of your excellent TS480 resource page and came to the section about the SO-3 TXCO and it's availability. I used to use a TS590 and ordered one for that. As you may be aware that comes already on a small daughterboard with an edge connector. I noticed that the actual oscillator itself soldered on the board looked identical to the one for the TS480. I sourced one of the cheap Chinese SO-3 knock offs for the TS590, de-soldered the TXCO and soldered it into my TS480. It worked absolutely perfectly and was just 4 Hz off on the WWV signal at 21MHz. 5 years on that cheap £12 Chinese TS590 SO3 knock off is still working fine in my TS480 and still with the same accuracy. They're still available for the same price from Ebay so for the sake of spending a few minutes desoldering the TXCO from the daughterboard you can save yourself over 80% of the price Kenwood are wanting for one. 73 Conor M0GVZ. After receiving Conor's email I had a look on Ebay UK and sure enough there were several overseas suppliers offering the TS590 version for about £10 to £12 each including shipping, as Conor indicated. This compares very favourably with the Kenwood version on the same website at £90 to £111 plus shipping, a huge saving. Just put 'Kenwood SO-3 TCXO' in the search box on Ebay. Thanks for the tip Conor. Go back to the previous page. Return to top of page. |
